What is premature rupture of the membranes (PROM) ?

Premature rupture of membranes (PMR) is an obstetric complication in which the amniotic membranes rupture before the onset of labour and before 37 weeks of amenorrhoea. This condition can have serious consequences for both mother and baby, including infections, premature delivery and neonatal
Complications.

WHY DO WE TEST ?
What are the main neonatal risks ?

Premature delivery : PROM is responsible for around 30-40% of premature deliveries.
Neonatal infections : The risk of neonatal infections, such as septicaemia, increases considerably in cases of PROM.
Respiratory distress syndrome : Premature newborns born after PROM are at increased risk of respiratory syndromes.
Neonatal mortality : The neonatal mortality rate is higher if the baby is born after a PROM, especially in countries with limited resources.

What are the main risks for the mother ?

Chorioamniotitis : Infection of the amniotic membranes and placental chorion is a frequent complication.
Postpartum endometritis : Inflammation of the inner lining of the uterus after childbirth.
Increased medical interventions : Women with PROM are more likely to require interventions such as
caesarean sections and prolonged hospital stays.
